Welcome, Folks! The world has broken
out in springtime Technicolor here, and life is very good. Here's the
latest news:
CATFISH IN THE MOVIES
Italian filmmaker
Francesco
Paladino came over to the house one afternoon last summer,
with lifetime friends
Gayla
Drake Paul, her husband,
Curtis Paul and
their son
Byrn.
Francesco was filming
"Iowa
Stories," a short film about the unexpected richness of
culture here in our native state. The film features some of
Gayla's music, and vignettes of life around Iowa.
Haunting music of
Joe
Price, BeJae Fleming, Billy Lee Janey and others are
included as well as scenes with the "Butter Cow Lady," a woman that
makes all kinds of cool sculptures with, you guessed it, butter! There
is an interview about the Voyager Space Probe program and Dr. Van
Allen, and other fascinating pieces. Included is a scene of myself
performing
"Eagle
Bird," and an off-the-cuff duet with Gayla of
"The Cookoo,"
and a short interview about the blues. I wasn't sure what to expect,
but it is a very charming, heartfelt film with a very cool, atmospheric
touch, and I'm very proud to be part of it.
"Iowa
Stories" has been chosen to be shown by the
Houston International Film Award
Society from April 20-29th.
"Iowa Stories"
is one of the featured films in the Short Films category.
Over 30,000 people attend the showings, with about 500 from
the movie industry.
NEW CD PROJECT
I'm now working on pieces for a brand new solo album. If all
goes well, I'll start recording this summer and have it released in
time for my UK Tour this fall. There are lots of new original songs and
some favorite deep blues and roots gems from the old treasure trove.
I'll record again in Iowa City with the very talented
Justin Kennedy.
We worked with Justin on the
Sweet Pea
CD, and I was tickled with the results. He was fantastic to
work with and I can't wait to get back in the studio again!
THE WORLD TOUR CONTINUES!
As well as gigs around the USA, in May we're going to Europe to perform
near
Antwerp,
Belgium for the
Duvel
Blues Festival and other exotic locales. This
summer
I'll return to the
Mississippi
Valley Blues Festival in my old Hometown of Davenport,
Iowa, and I'll do a month-long blues in the schools residency sponsored
by the MVBS in Rock Island, Illinois. This fall we'll return again to
the
United Kingdom
for another big tour in October and November. If you have a venue in
mind, let us know, we've still got some dates available. We'll return
to
France
in late November/early December! Check out my
Tour Dates
page for full details.
